Messier 83 lies roughly 15 million light-years away in the huge southern constellation of Hydra (the Sea Serpent). It stretches across 40 000 light-years, making it roughly 2.5 times smaller than our own Milky Way. However, in some respects, Messier 83 is quite similar to our own galaxy. Both the Milky Way and Messier 83 have a bar across their galactic nucleus, the dense spherical conglomeration of stars seen at the centre of the galaxies. TRAPPIST (TRAnsiting Planets and PlanetesImals Small Telescope) is devoted to the study of planetary systems through two approaches: the detection and characterisation of planets located outside the Solar System (exoplanets) and the study of comets orbiting around the Sun. The 60-cm national telescope is operated from a control room in Liège, Belgium, 12 000 km away. The image was made from data obtained through three filters (B, V and R) and the field of view is about 20 arcminutes across.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/retaliation-of-hawking.png</image:loc><image:title>Retaliation of Hawking</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/eso1033a.jpg</image:loc><image:title>VISTA Magellanic Cloud Survey view of the Tarantula Nebula*</image:title><image:caption>This VISTA image shows the spectacular 30 Doradus star-forming region, also called the Tarantula Nebula. At its core is a large cluster of stars known as R 136, in which some of the most massive stars known are located. This infrared image, made with ESO’s VISTA survey telescope, is from the VISTA Magellanic Cloud Survey. The project will scan a vast area — 184 square degrees of the sky (corresponding to almost one thousand times the apparent area of the full Moon), including our nearby neighbouring galaxies, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The end result will be a detailed study of the star formation history and three-dimensional geometry of the Magellanic system. This image was created from images taken through Y, J and Ks filters in the near-infrared part of the spectrum (coloured blue, green and red respectively). The exposure times were 40, 47 and 81 minutes per filter respectively. The image covers a region of sky about 52 by 70 arcminutes. This image is available as a mounted image in the ESOshop.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/anti_spiral_by_shiugy-d79921w.png</image:loc><image:title>anti_spiral_by_shiugy-d79921w</image:title></image:image><lastmod>2024-03-19T18:19:07+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/2017/04/01/the-scientific-imaginary-creatures-ii-floaters-and-other-life-in-jupiter/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/scavengers_ed.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Scavengers_ed</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/hunters_ed.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Hunters_ed</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/floaters_ed.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Floaters_Ed</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/sinkers_ed1.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Sinkers_ed</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/jovian-atmosphere.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Jovian atmosphere</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/20131102_cosmos-episode-2-jovian-life-full.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Hunters, Floaters, Sinkers (HFS)</image:title><image:caption>HFS mural dimensions 90 x 120 inches, airbrushed acrylic&#13;PBS series and book, 'Cosmos', by Carl Sagan, 1981</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2024-03-18T19:49:16+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/2020/08/16/art-and-science-navigating-the-maze-in-the-19th-century/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/monde-papillons-portada.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>Monde papillons portada</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/monde-papillons-2.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>Monde Papillons 2</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/monde-papillons-1.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>Monde Papillons 1</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/our-dhalia.png</image:loc><image:title>Our dhalia</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://onelephantsandbacteria.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/nohant.png</image:loc><image:title>Nohant</image:title><image:caption>Nohant house (left) and a view of the gardens (right).
